Cen Shen Poem: For Du Fu –
For Du Fu Cen Shen We go up the steps in a flight, You at the left, I at the right. At dawn we enter palace gate; Perfumed at dusk, we come back late. White-haired, we're grieved that flowers die, And envy birds in azure sky. Nothing lacks when the reign is nice; There is less need for our advice. It is a poem written by Cen Shen, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. It is a euphemistic and sarcastic poem, using a twisted and obscure technique to lament his life and give vent to his resentment against the imperial court, which is called praising the imperial court for its lack of sarcastic advice, but in fact contains a deep sarcastic meaning. The poem is gorgeous, elegant and noble, with a sense of derision and praise, with a hidden needle in it, and with a sense of inexhaustible search for ideas. -

As if the vernal breeze had come back overnight, Adorning thousands of pear trees with blossoms white. Flakes enter pearled blinds and wet the silken screen; No furs of fox can warm us nor brocade quilts green. The general cannot draw his rigid bow with ease; E’en the commissioner in coat of mail would freeze. A thousand feet o’er cracked wilderness ice piles, And gloomy clouds hang sad and drear for miles and miles. We drink in headquarters to our guest homeward bound; With Tartar lutes, pipas and pipes the camps resound. Snow in huge flakes at dusk falls heavy on camp gate; The frozen red flag in the wind won’t undulate. At eastern gate of Wheel Tower we bid goodbye On the snow-covered road to…- 66

I know you’re used to hardship on the west frontier; Oh, could the moon over Wheel Tower make you drear? Unsaddle your horse, drink and drown in wine your woe; I’ll see you go for miles and miles to beat the foe. You will win rank and fame only on battle steed; A real hero must have done heroic deed. This quatrain reveals a wife’s fear of being deserted.- 52

Cen Shen Poem: The Mountainside Bower –
The Mountainside Bower Cen Shen High bower scrapes celestial sphere, When I climb, the sun seems near. The sunlit trees appear in bloom; The mist-veiled royal tombs in gloom. Far-off high mountains low would seem; Windows belittle flowing stream. To freedom had I known the way, I would worship Buddha for age. This poem is an exhaustive description of the majestic and high height of the Chief Master's Pavilion. The high pavilion in the poem is a building in the Chief Master's Temple, which was written in the poem by Cen Shen because it is so high. The logic of the poem is still to write about the scenery first and then add a personal comment at the end. The first and second stanzas exaggerate the towering position of the pavilion in the temple, and the middle four stanzas are about the view from the pavilion. The whole poem is easy to understand, it is about a high pavilion, but at the end it points out the function of this pavilion, which is a Buddhist… -
Cen Shen Poem: Nostalgia on Mountain-climbing Day– 岑参《行军九日思长安故园》
Nostalgia on Mountain-climbing Day Cen Shen Strongly I'd climb up mountains high, But none would send me wine cups filled. Chrysanthemums might blow, I sigh, In gardens turned to battlefield. The poem "Nostalgia on Mountain-climbing Day" is a five-part poem composed by the Tang Dynasty poet Cen Shen. Cen Shen Poem: Reply to Jia Zhi’s Morning Levee– 岑参《和贾舍人早朝》
Reply to Jia Zhi's Morning Levee Cen Shen At cockcrow twilight chills the royal purple lanes; Orioles trill in the capital when spring wanes. When royal bells chime at dawn, opens door on door; To guarded jade steps come officials more and more. When stars begin to fade, swords clink by flowers' side; The willow twigs caress the flags with dew undried. Alone the poet on the Phoenix Pool will sing; None could equal him on his song of Sunny Spring. This poem is a poem with the title of "Early Morning", but the content of the poem only tries to set up the solemnity and grandeur of the early morning, which is of little value.
