Liu Zongyuan: Abiding by the Runlet ~ 《溪居》 柳宗元 with English Translations
"Riverside Dwelling" is a poem written by Tang Dynasty writer Liu Zongyuan after he was demoted to Yongzhou. This poem describes how he lived a leisurely life by building a house by the stream after being demoted to Yongzhou, which is known as the "Southern Wilderness". On the surface, it is a self-entertainment and self-enjoyment, but in fact it indirectly expresses the resentment of being exiled, and the words imply the author's depression that his ambitions could not be fulfilled. Abiding by the Runlet Liu Zongyuan For long being entangled by ties of office,I sense fine hap as an exile to the wild South. In my leisurely sojourn with farming neighbours,I feel I am somewhat like a mountain sylvan. In daybreak tillage upturning dewy weeds,In nightly row resounding oar strokes from bank rocks,I come and go without meeting anyone. And sing aloud 'neath the azure sky of Chu.- 57

Liu Zongyuan: An Early Morning Visit to the Buddhist Priest Chao to Read the Chan Scriptures ~ 《晨诣超师院读禅经》 柳宗元 with English Translations
"Reading Zen Sutras at Chaoshiyuan in the Morning" is a work by Tang Dynasty writer Liu Zongyuan. This is a lyric poem expressing feelings. This poem describes the scene and feelings of reading Zen sutras in the morning, tortuously expressing the depression buried in the heart, and expressing the poet's philosophical insights. The first half describes the poet's reading of sutras at the Zen temple, accusing the world of chasing those absurd things instead of understanding the true meaning of Buddhist scriptures. The second half describes that he believes that the essence of Buddhism and Confucianism have something in common, but it is difficult to master how to cultivate one's nature. However, he lingers and enjoys the quiet and elegant Zen temple. The whole poem describes the state of mind of practicing Zen, as well as the relaxed, happy and leisurely mentality of those who are deeply interested in Zen. An Early Morning Visit to the Buddhist Priest Chao to Read the Chan Scriptures Liu Zongyuan Drawing water from the well, I rinse my cold teeth,Brushing my dusty gown, I purify my mind.Quietly I open the Tree-Leaf Book of Sutra,And reading, I leave the East Study…- 56
