Zhang Lei: Summer Days ~ 《夏日》 张耒 with English Translations
"Summer" is a seven-character quatrain written by Zhang Lei of the Song Dynasty. This poem was written when the poet was dismissed from office and lived in the countryside. After the poet was dismissed from office and returned to his hometown, he wrote three poems on this topic, and this is one of them. The work expresses the poet's love for a quiet and peaceful life through the description of summer swallows, butterflies, spiders and other images, and expresses the poet's noble feelings of being indifferent to fame and fortune, tired of the world, unwilling to compete with the world, and yearning for rural life. Summer Days Zhang Lei It is breezy and sunny in this riverside hamlet in summer,And swallows and sparrows have their nestles under the eaves.Butterflies are flitting among flowers and trees,And spiders weave cobwebs silently in the corners of the house. The moonlight comes in through the sparse curtain at night,One hears the sound of the brook outside on his bamboo pillow. The hair on my temples has turned grey, snowy and frosty,I desire only to live my life as a woodcutter or a fisherman.- 52

Butterflies bask and dance at noon on blooming trees; A spider weaves its web in a corner with ease. The moon embroiders shadows on my window screen; My pillow inhales the murmuring stream unseen. The hair on my forehead has tamed snow-white for long; I'd pass my life enjoying a fisherman's song.
