Zhu Xi: Portraits ~ 朱熹·《送郭拱辰序》 with English Translations
The Preface to Sending Guo Gongchen "is a preface written by Zhu Xi of the Southern Song Dynasty. The words in this article are sharp and profound, the length is concise and the meaning is good at turning. The author first writes about Guo Jun's superb painting skills, highlighting his "posture of a deer and the nature of the forest". Afterwards, he wrote that he was going on a trip and wanted to draw the form of a hidden gentleman to return, but Guo Jun couldn't regret his actions, vaguely revealing the intention of leaving the country and the wise being in opposition. The words are concise and meaningful, with endless aftertaste. Portraits Zhu Xi It has always been considered first-class work in portrait painting, even for the most skilful artist, when the result is a likeness, more or less exact, of the mere features. Such skill is now possessed by Kuo Kung-ch'en; but what is still more marvelous, he catches the very expression, and reproduces, as it were, the inmost mid of his model. I had already heard much of him from a couple of friends; however, on my sending for him, he did…- 51

Zhu Xi Poem: The Book –
The Book Zhu Xi There lies a glassy oblong pool, Where light and shade pursue their course.
Pomegranate Flowers Zhu Xi Pomegranates in the fifth moon dazzle the sight; Among the branches you perceive their seeds pearl-bright. But this is a place where no cabs nor horses cross; You see only reds fallen pellmell on green moss. The poem "Pomegranate Flowers" is a poem by Han Yu of the Tang Dynasty (or a poem by Zhu Xi of the Song Dynasty, which is a mistake of later generations). The first two lines of the poem indicate the time of the year, outlining the lush and rosy scene of pomegranate blossoms in May; the second two lines indicate the place, indicating that the pomegranate blossoms are not appreciated and thus the beauty is silent and falling, euphemistically expressing the poet's lonely state of mind. The whole poem describes the scenery freshly and naturally, and implies the philosophy of life in the description of objective scenery.
