“Thirteen Poems on Reading the Classic of Mountains and Seas” is a collection of poems by Tao Yuanming, a writer from the Jin and Song dynasties. The first poem is a preface, and the following twelve poems are written with themes extracted from the Classic of Mountains and Seas and the Chronicles of Emperor Mu. In the collection of poems, the legends, myths, fables, and historical facts of the world are transformed into sparks of wisdom, mournful sighs, earth-shaking roars, sincere admiration, instant enlightenment, mysterious illusions, or warning declarations through its “magic mirror”, which can be seen as a comprehensive reflection of the author’s state of mind in his prime.

O ye, Mountains of Jade, Beauties enthroned,

On which sits smiling our Queen of the West!

With Heaven and Earth was she born and bred,

For no one knows how many millenniums.

Endlessly her ethereal nature transforms itself,

And from mountain to mount she changes her abode.

Drinking on high the Son of Heaven hears her sing—

What rare, refreshing tunes,

Unknown to the worldly ears!

In terrace on Jade Hill with clouds abreast

Lives beautiful Queen Mother of the West.

She is as old as Heaven and the earth;

Millenniums have passed ever since her birth.

She alters her ethereal shapes at will,

With residences from hill to hill.

In the royal feast she sang new airs,

New airs without the slightest worldly cares.

Exquisite is the Jade Terrace hanging over crimson clouds,

Radiant are the Grand Old Lady’s beauteous features.

Born she was with earth and heaven,

No one knows her age.

Boundless are her powers,

Her quarters are not confined to a single mountain.

Offhand she sang when toasted,

A far cry from the doggerel of our time.
