To Wang Lun Who Comes to Bid Me Farewell

I,Li Bai sit aboard a ship about to go,

When suddenly on shore footsteps and songs o’erflow.

The Lake of Peach Blossom is a thousand fathoms deep,

But not so deep as the friendship Wang Lun and I keep.

“Presented to Wang Lun” is the most widely circulated of Li Bai’s farewell poems. It is said that Wang Lun wrote to Li Bai and said: “Sir, do you like to travel? There are ten miles of peach blossoms here; Sir, do you like wine? There is a Wanjia Hotel here.” Li Bai came happily, but Wang Lun smiled and said: “Ten miles of peach blossoms refer to the Taohuatan ten miles away, and the Wanjia Hotel is a hotel opened by a man named Wan.” Li Bai laughed. After visiting Taohuatan, Li Bai was about to leave, but suddenly Wang Lun’s fellow villagers came to see him off hand in hand, tapping their feet to the beat. So Li Bai used exaggeration again to write this good poem that was as natural as speaking.
