The Parrot Song: Mountain Pavilion Yixing “is a prose piece created by Feng Zizhen, a Yuan Dynasty composer. This is a song that is indifferent to fame and fortune, pursuing the realm of returning to the countryside and living a simple and authentic life. In the first part of this prose piece, the author self mocks himself as an unintelligent woodcutter who moved to the mountains; In the latter half, the author expressed his ambition: even if friends advised him to leave the mountains, he would insist that while living in the mountains is certainly difficult, returning to the court would be even more painful. The language of this sanqu is concise, and the use of allusions is very clever.
Tune: Song of Parrot
A Hermit’s Pleasure in the Mountain Pavilion
Feng Zizhen
I move my house atop the frowning hill;
As a woodman I am a green hand still.
I play chess till flowers fall from old trees,
Branch on branch, leaf on leaf, in rain and breeze.
My friends would call me back, but I say I’d rather stay.
Pointing to clouds and hills before my door,
I need to pay for the scene I adore.
