Twenty Four Examples of Filial Duty: Lu Ji Reserved Two Oranges for His Mother

Lu Ji Reserved Two Oranges for His Mother

Lu Ji of the Eastern Han Dynasty went to see Yuan Shu in Jiujiang when he was only six. Yuan Shu took out oranges to treat Lu Ji, who took two of them and put them into his bosom. Later, when Lu Ji bowed, bidding goodbye, the two oranges fell out of his bosom onto the ground. Yuan Shu asked, “You are a guest here, how can you hide oranges in your bosom?” Lu Ji knelt down and replied, “My mother likes oranges very much, so I want to take some for her.” Yuan Shu was greatly surprised.
