Xu Hun: Early Autumn ~ 《早秋》 许浑 with English Translations

“Early Autumn” is a five-character regulated verse by the Tang Dynasty poet Xu Hun. This poem describes the scenery of early autumn. The first four lines describe the night scene of early autumn, and the fifth and sixth lines describe the day scene of early autumn. In the process of describing the autumn scenery, the poet pays attention to the height, distance and nearness, and his writing is meticulous and well-organized. “One leaf falling tells us that autumn has arrived”, and the last two lines use allusions from “Huainanzi” and “Chuci”, which are integrated and full of spirit, and also implicitly express the lament of his life experience.

Early Autumn

Xu Hun

The clear sound of zither hovers at night,
Among green vines rises the western breeze.
The last fireflies rest on the dew jade-white,
The Milky Way is brushed by early wild-geese.
At dawn tall trees still loom thick and high;
In the sunshine many distant hills awake.
one leaf having fallen south of River Huai—
I feel autumn in the waves of Donting Lake.
