“Inscription on Tongguan Posthouse on the Way to the Imperial Palace in Autumn” is a work by Tang Dynasty poet Xu Hun. The first two lines of the poem sketch a picture of autumn travel, revealing a sad mood and conveying the taste of the journey; the middle four lines sketch the surrounding scenery in a grand and vast manner, all of which are typical scenery of Tongguan; the last two lines implicitly express his own interest.

At dust the rustling red leaves give sigh after sign
While at the Post House I drink my gourdful of wine.
Evening clouds float back to Western Mountains high;
Across the Middle Ridges sails a rain so fine.
I see the brilliant trees color the city wall;
I hear the River rumbling to the distant sea.
Tomorrow I’ll reach the Imperial Capital;
Yet fisherman or woodsman I still dream to be.
