Xue Angfu: Winter To the Tune of Pleasure in Front of Palace ~ 薛昂夫·《殿前欢·冬》 with English Translations

Xue Angfu (1267-1359) was a prose composer of the Yuan Dynasty. Uyghur (now Uyghur), originally named Xue Chaowu, took the first character as his surname. The ancestors migrated internally and were from Menglu (now Qinyang, Henan). Both ancestors and fathers were granted the title of Duke of Qin. The Han surname is Ma, also known as Jiugao, hence it is also referred to as Ma Angfu or Ma Jiugao. According to Zhao Mengfu’s “Preface to Xue Angfu’s Poetry Collection” (“Collected Works of Song Xuezhai”), he once held the ceremony of being a disciple under Liu Chenweng (1234-1297), which can be inferred that he was born around the early Yuan Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty. He served as the magistrate of Jiangxi Province, and held various positions such as the official of Ruiyuan, the general manager of Taiping Road, and the general manager of Quzhou Road. Xue Angfu is skilled in seal script and has poetry titles, but his collection of poems has been lost. The poems are stored in collections such as “Huangyuan Fengya Hou Ji” and “Yuan Shi Xuan”.

Xue Angfu’s “Joy in front of the Palace: Winter” depicts the scenery of a lonely mountain in winter and the emotional fluctuations in the poet’s heart, showcasing the poet’s reclusive feelings of transcendence and leisure.

Winter

To the Tune of Pleasure in Front of Palace

Xue Angfu

Forward are waves surging,

Fishermen cast nets while spring tide is coming,

In the woods woodmen are busy working.

So loud is the sound of cutting,

Harder than politicians of vanity fair they’re toiling,

Even so strenuous,

Enjoying their life they are vigorous.

Whether fishermen and woodmen are laughing at me I wonder,

Or I’m laughing at them as they are ridiculous.
