Xue Tao (approximately 768-832 AD) was a female poet of the Tang Dynasty, with the courtesy name Hongdu. He was born in Chang’an (now Xi’an, Shaanxi). After his father Xue Yun became an official and came to Shu, Xue Tao lived in Chengdu after his father’s death. When living in Chengdu, the highest local military and political commander in Chengdu, Jiannan Xichuan Jiedushi, had been replaced eleven times, and most of them had literary exchanges with Xue Tao.

Cicadas

Xue Tao

Dew drops bathe their clear, distant tones

When wind blows together a few leaves.

Sound after sound seems closely joined,

Though each lives on a different branch.

(Anthony C. Yu 译)

Cicadas

Xue Tao

The clear, pure sounds of dripping dew

carry far away;

withered leaves blown by the wind

pile up day by day.

The chirping of each insect

seems to join with the rest,

even if every one of them

has a separate nest.

(Bannie Chow, Thomas Cleary 译)
