“Quail Sky: Drunkenly Patting Spring Clothes and Cherish the Old Fragrance” is a work by Yan Jidao, a poet of the Northern Song Dynasty. In the author’s memories of the past joys and laughter, this poem reveals his infinite feelings and slight sadness for his life. The first part describes the sorrow of parting from the perspective of the room, and the second part follows the description of the scenery in the first part and extends the field of vision, describing the long and difficult journey home and the hopeless encounter with the vastness of the world.
Partridge Sky
Yan Jidao
Drunk, I caress my robe which smells sweet as of old;
Heaven would vex me with parting grief wild and cold.
From year to year green grass will yellow by roadside;
From day to day my bower’s drowned in eventide.
Cloud on cloud passes by
O’er water far and nigh.
How long’s my roamer’s homeward way?
Could I express my longing night and day?
Oh, shed no tears on what you’ll say!
