Yu Xuanji: Late Spring Impromptu ~ 鱼玄机·《暮春即事》 with English Translations

《暮春即事》是唐代女诗人鱼玄机创作的一首七言律诗。首联一二句,写孤独寂寞,思念情人。颔联三四句,想象梦中情人的生活,一定很高雅、豪华。颈联五六句,居住穷巷,喧闹,不得安静。尾联七八句,希望过自由的生活。此诗抒写作者的孤独寂寞,对情人的思念,以及对自由生活的向往之情。

The poem ‘The Beginning of Late Spring’ is a seven character regulated poem created by the Tang Dynasty female poet Renyu Xuanji. The first line consists of one or two sentences, depicting loneliness and longing for one’s lover. Three or four lines of couplet, imagine the life of the dream lover, it must be very elegant and luxurious. Five or six lines on the neck couplet, living in a poor alley, noisy, not quiet. Seven or eight sentences at the end, hoping to live a free life. This poem expresses the author’s loneliness, longing for their lover, and yearning for a free life.

深巷穷门少侣俦,阮郎唯有梦中留。

香飘罗绮谁家席,风送歌声何处楼。

街近鼓鼙喧晓睡,庭闲鹊语乱春愁。

安能追逐人间事,万里身同不系舟。

Living on a side street

in a house of poverty,

few are my companions

in this hidden alleyway;

only in the heart of dreams

is my beloved there.

Incense wafts into my silken dress,

where are they having a party?

The breeze carries with it the voice of song;

where is the pleasure pavilion?

The street is so near, I’m wakened at dawn

by the sound of noisy drumming,

my courtyard’s so peaceful,

the magpies’ chatter

scatters my springtime sorrows.

How can I pursue the affairs

that belong to the human world?

Remaining the same for ten thousand miles,

I never tie down my boat.
