Yuan Hongdao: Yamen Runners Pressganging Fishermen on a River ~ 袁宏道·《江上见数渔舟为公卒所窘》 with English Translations

The poem ‘Seeing Several Fishing Boats Embarrassed by Public Soldiers on the River’ is a five character quatrain written by Yuan Hongdao of the Ming Dynasty. The first two lines of the poem describe the desolate scene of a fisherman with frost on his fishing rod at dawn and clothes covered in thin reed fluff; The last two sentences describe the social situation behind the fisherman, where land that was not registered with the government was also reclaimed by officials. It expresses the author’s anger towards an unfair society and sympathy for the impoverished and disadvantaged living conditions of the lower class people.

Yamen Runners Pressganging Fishermen on a River

Yuan Hongdao

They go fishing at dawn amid frost,

Wearing clothes thinly padded with reed catkins.

Though there is not a mu of land registered as theirs,

They are drafted to do unpaid services all the same.
