Zhang Yuangan: Silk-Washing Stream ~ 《浣溪沙·山绕平湖》 张元干 with English Translations

“Huanxisha: Mountains Surrounding the Calm Lake, Waves Shaking the City” is a poem written by Zhang Yuangan, a poet in the Song Dynasty, and is included in the “Dictionary of Appreciation of Tang and Song Poems”. This poem not only describes the beauty of lakes and mountains, but also describes the poet’s lingering demeanor immersed in the natural scenery of mountains and rivers. The scene and the mood complement each other, expressing the poet’s intoxication with the beautiful scenery of mountains and rivers and his difficulty in letting go.

Silk-Washing Stream

Zhang Yuangan

The hills-girt lakeside town seems in the waves to shake;
The hills’ shadows look more green when steeped in the lake.
Under the crystal tower it will be midnight soon.
Willows darken in mist when clouds sail across the moon;
The dewdrops drip from the lotus leaves like fireflies.
With loosened hair I sit and croon until sunrise.
