Zhang Yue: My Delayed Departure for the Capital ~ 《蜀道后期》 张说 with English Translations

“The Late Shu Road” is a poem by Zhang Shuo, a minister of the Tang Dynasty. The first two lines of the poem describe the author’s efforts to return to Luoyang on time, but the situation suddenly changed and his hope of returning to Luoyang before autumn was dashed, expressing his disappointment; the author of the last two lines circumvents the issue and complains about the ruthless autumn wind that did not wait for him to arrive in Luoyang first, expressing his inner feelings and clarifying the theme. In this way, the author avoids the problem of being straightforward and boring, personifies the originally ruthless autumn wind, and expresses his worries by complaining about the autumn wind, which is implicit and euphemistic, and is thought-provoking.

My Delayed Departure for the Capital

Zhang Yue

My heart wies with the sun in speed;
I count the days my journey need.
The autumn wind won’t wait for me;
It arrives there where I would be.
