Zhao Gu, courtesy name Chengyou, was a native of Shanyang, Chuzhou (now Huai’an District, Huai’an City, Jiangsu Province), and a poet of the Tang Dynasty. He was born in the first year of Yuanhe reign of Emperor Xianzong (806). He traveled extensively when he was young, but failed the provincial examination in the seventh year of Dahe reign. He stayed in Chang’an for many years, visiting wealthy families to pursue fame and fortune. During this time, he seemed to have worked in the government of Lingbiao for several years. Later, he returned to Jiangdong and settled in Runzhou (now Zhenjiang). He passed the imperial examination in the fourth year of Huichang reign and returned to the east a year later. At the end of Huichang reign or the beginning of Dazhong reign, he returned to Chang’an and became a Weinan Wei. He died in office in the sixth or seventh year of Dazhong reign of Emperor Xuanzong (852, 853).

《送别》 赵嘏
去日家无儋石储,汝须勤若事樵渔。
古人尽向尘中远,白日耕田夜读书。
Farewell Speech
Zhao Gu
Now you leave home, we have but a few litres of grain,
You can earn a fisher’s wages or follow a woodman’s way.
Young people of yore, when going out to learn, would fain
Burn the midnight oil and till the fields in the day.
