“The Tomb of King Yue’e” is a seven-character rhymed poem written by the poet Zhao Mengfu during the Song and Yuan Dynasties. It is a nostalgic seven-character rhymed poem. This poem was written to reflect this reality, expressing the author’s sighs and condolences for the murder of the hero of the Jin Dynasty and his condemnation of the Southern Song Dynasty monarchs and ministers for mistreating the country, revealing his deep thoughts about his motherland. The title of the first couplet is a lyrical description of the scene, reflecting the poet’s miserable and desolate mood. The couplet directly accused Song Gaozong of violating ancient precepts, putting the cart before the horse, confusing right and wrong, and disregarding the life and death of millions of people in the Central Plains. The neck couplet lamented that Yue Fei was killed and the decline of the Southern Song Dynasty was irreversible; the world was divided and the situation of peace in one corner could not be sustained. The last couplet echoes the title, telling people to “Don’t sing this song to the West Lake”, otherwise it will cause the beauty of the lake and mountains, and the sadness of all things in the world.

Worshiped the Emperor’s flag,
Day and night!
The hero is dead:
Sighing won’t bring him back.
And the country collapsed.
Enough: this is the wrong place to sing this song.

Draws out my tears.
