Editor’s Note: “The Pavilion in the Bamboo Grove” is a five-character poem written by Wang Wei, a Tang Dynasty poet, when he lived in seclusion in Lantian Wangchuan in his later years. This poem describes the interest of living in seclusion in the mountains and forests, and is a casual expression of leisure. The words and sentences are simple and beautiful, conveying the poet’s tranquil and indifferent mood, and expressing a quiet, peaceful, elegant and extraordinary realm. Although the whole poem is only 20 words long, it has scenery and emotions, sound and color, stillness and movement, reality and illusion, and is a perfect expression of the poet’s attitude towards life and the characteristics of his works.

Alone I sit in dark bamboo,
strumming the lute, whistling away;
deep woods that no one knows,
where a bright moon comes to shine on me.
