After Coming Outside the Strategic Border Stronghold: Five Poems

Hou Chu Sai: Wu Shou

Zhao jin dong men jian
Mu shang he yang qiao.
Luo ri zhao da qi
Ma ming feng xiao xiao.

Ping sha lie wan mu
Bu wu ge jian zhao.
Zhong tian xuan ming yue
Ling yan ye ji liao.

Bei jia shu sheng dong
Zhuang shi can bu jiao.
Jie wen da jiang shei?
Kong shi huo piao yao.

After Going Outside the Strategic Border Stronghold: Five Poems

Dawn enters the eastern garrison gates
Before sunset at the northern end of a Yellow River bridge.
Setting sun illuminates large flags and banners
Horse and wind sounds rustling.

Level sand, rows and columns of thousands of tents
Each unit and region shows its colors.
In the sky hangs the bright moonlight
New recruits with solitary and lonesome evenings.

Touching and melancholy local music sounds
After early training, young soldiers lose their pride and bravado.
May I ask who is the general in command?
Perhaps it is Field Marshall Huo Qubing.

Notes:

Yellow River:  Major river of northern China.

Huo Qubing:  (140-117 BC) Very famous and successful army general of the Western Han Dynasty. Calvary expert in fighting the northern nomads, Xiongnu, expanding the Han empire.
