He Shuangqing: Huan xi sha ~ 贺双卿·《浣溪沙》 with English Translations

It is said that this word was written in powder on a peony leaf. The imagery in the first part of the poem is very beautiful. Look, the early summer showers float in the valleys and fields, the new wheat that has already entered the field emits a refreshing fragrance, and the shepherd boy with flowers on his head rides leisurely on the back of a cow. However, in such a bountiful season, the poet showed no joy at all. She finished her farm work and had to go home to cook, so busy that her back and waist were sore, and she still couldn’t help but be criticized and scolded. Being angry early or late is really a dilemma. Fu Hangu is evil, everything doesn’t seem pleasing to the eye. Shuangqing is so helpless, suffering both physically and mentally. Her inner distress, anger, and pain cannot be expressed, and there is nowhere to express them. She can only use the pen in her hand to pour out her full of grievances on paper, forming blood and tears in her poems. Poetry is her only audience, only refuge, and only shining point in life. Alone at night, her inner thoughts flow like a spring to the pen, and her inner pain also flows like a spring water. ‘This hatred is endless,’ so she endured the pain and wrote this poem ‘Washing the Sand of the River’.

Huan xi sha

He Shuangqing

The warm rain falls unfeeling like scattered threads of silk.

A herd boy tucks a flower bud askew behind his ear

While taking new grains from the small field to the threshing floor.

Draw the water, plant the melons, but he gets mad too early!

Bear the smoke, cook the millet, he’s mad again too late!

The day is long and my body is racked with aches and weariness.
