Lu Yu: Passing By a Floating Bridge On the Way to Nan Tai

Passing By a Floating Bridge On the Way to Nan Tai

Du Fu Qiao Zhi Nan Tai

Ke zhong duo bing fei deng lin
Wen shui nan tai shi yi xun.
Jiu gui xu xing nu tao shang
Qian sou heng ji da jiang xin.

Si lou zhong gu cui hun xiao
Xu luo yun yan zi gu jin.
Bai fa wei chu hao qi zai
Zui chui heng di zuo rong yin.

Passing By a Floating Bridge On the Way to Nan Tai

Among visitors with many illnesses, gave up the hikes for good views
Heard that Nan Tai is a place worth a visit.
Several cart tracks have traveled about the river waves
Hundreds of boats tied up together to endure the wide river.

Temple drum and bells hasten the dusk and dawns
From ancient times, collapsing huts naturally amid the clouds of smoke.
Even with white hair, not ready to give up my heroic spirit
Drunkenness wearing off, sit here in the shade of a banyan tree playing my bamboo flute.

Notes:

Lu Yu was given an imperial edict from the palace while in Fuzhou Province.  He was to go work in Nan Tai.
