Lu Yu: Evening Anchorage ~ 《晚泊》 陆游 with English Translations
Lu You "Late Mooring" is a seven-character regulated verse written by Lu You, a poet of the Southern Song Dynasty. The first two couplets of the poem explain the reason for late mooring, which is traveling by boat, and the gloomy mood. The third couplet introduces the late mooring, which is expressed through a small incident when mooring the boat and the scenery in front of the eyes. The last couplet conveniently brings out the location of the late mooring on the south bank of the Huai River. The last sentence is very bleak, which is closely in line with the poet's mood. The whole poem seems to be written casually, but it still has a coherent feeling and neat parallelism. It is a good chapter in Lu You's early poems. Evening Anchorage Lu Yu Half my days spentwithout ever returning home, truly a rolling stone; nowthis year I dreamed I wasback again in Patung; I havetravelled over dangerous placesthrough mountains, beside precipices;lonely, except when at timesa neighbouring boat asksfor a light for their fire;all along the cliffs are shrineswhere boatmen prayfor favourable winds; thenwe come to anchorageon the south of the Huai Riverand I watch the…- 50

Lu Yu: Life and Times
Lu Yu (1125-1210) : Life and Times In the first poem of this collection, Lu Yu wrote about his grandfather. It appeared that this man had passed the imperial exams, and was of a rank that allowed him to attend the dawn audiences of the emperor. This poem also mentioned how the people continued to hold a high respect for the grandfather even after his death. Records show that the Lu family had three previous generations to Lu You that were educated and of proper Confucian integrity. They all held mid-level government positions, but did not climb any higher in the imperial bureaucracy because of their criticisms of the emperor. Lu’s story then picks up in the year 1127. At the age of two, the family was able to return to their hometown, San Yin, a town in Shaanxi Province near the border to Zhejiang Province, having been forced to flee in front of the Jin army. After enjoying two years at home, the family again had to flee the northern invaders, this time running away into the mountains at Dong Yang. They had to stay here for three years. The northern invaders were the Jin armies. The Jin were… -
