Su Shi: An Impromptu Verse ~ 《纵笔》 苏轼 with English Translations
This is a poem written by Su Shi when he was exiled to Huizhou. It shows the friendly relationship with the locals and is also a concrete manifestation of Su Shi's easy-going personality. It was written in the fourth year of Shaosheng (1097). Not long after, he was exiled to Danzhou (northwest of Hainan Island, which was called Nanning Army in the Song Dynasty and was the most remote and desolate military state at that time). Perhaps it was related to this poem. According to Zeng Jili's "Tingzhai Poetry Talk" in the Song Dynasty, this poem was seen by Zhang Dun, the prime minister at that time, who thought that Su Shi was so comfortable with his "spring sleep beauty" and was angry and exiled him to Danzhou again. An Impromptu Verse Su Shi A white-haired man, failing but full of zest,Rests his ailing limbs on the wicker couch in his small study.Tell them your master enjoys his sleep in spring,That the priest may toll his watch softly.- 54

"Heavy Rain in Youmei Hall" is a seven-character regulated verse written by Su Shi in the Song Dynasty. This poem vividly shows the spectacular scene of heavy rain coming from far away, across the river, and roaring. The first couplet very characteristically describes the atmosphere before the rain. When the thick clouds that cannot be dispelled piled up in the low sky, a thunderclap came out of the clouds, indicating that the heavy rain is coming. The three sentences of the second couplet are imagination, and the four sentences are personal experience. The two sentences of the third couplet specifically describe the heavy rain, comparing the West Lake to a small golden cup and the heavy rain to the sound of the 羯鼓. The last couplet describes the impression, a sudden whim, and associates it with the story of Li Bai. The poem is like a sketch painter improvising, copying the real scene of nature, showing the magnificent and majestic scenery of nature. A Cloud-Burst at Youmei Hall Su Shi A clap of thunder under the visitors’ feet,Massed clouds around too dense to sweep away;A hurricane on the skyline whips up the sea,And rain pelts down…- 46

He did not complain about the hardships of the journey, but hoped that the auspicious snow would foreshadow a good harvest, so that the farmers who had suffered from locusts and droughts for years could have peace. Caught in Snow Su Shi Heavy snow on New Year’s Eve kept me at Weizhou. Su Shi: Recalling the Old Days at Mianchi ~ 《和子由渑池怀旧》 苏轼 with English Translations
"Recalling the Past at Mianchi with Ziyou" is a work by Su Shi, a writer in the Song Dynasty. This poem expresses the melancholy of the uncertainty of life and the deep affection for the past. The first four lines use the footprints of wild geese in the snow and mud to compare life, and regard life as a long journey; the last four lines echo the title of "nostalgia" and use narrative to deepen the feeling of the footprints of wild geese in the snow and mud. The whole poem is turbulent and lively, with a free artistic conception, and is a famous poem among Su Shi's seven-character regulated verses. Recalling the Old Days at Mianchi Su Shi To what can we liken human life?Perhaps to a wild swan’s footprints on mud or snow:By chance its claws imprint the mudBefore it flies off at random, east or west. The old monk is dead and a new pagoda built; The old wall has crumbled, the poem we wrote on it gone.Do you still remember this rugged mountain path,The long way, or exhaustion and how the lame donkey brayed?- 62

Su Shi: A Note Written at Night in Tanchow ~ with English Translations
"Night Book of Dan'er" is a short travel essay, selected from "Dongpo Zhilin". In the second year of Yuanfu of Emperor Zhezong of Song Dynasty (1099), Su Shi was the deputy governor of Danzhou. On the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the Lantern Festival, Su Shi was invited by several elderly scholars to visit the Lantern Market. He returned home after having a lot of fun but could not enter the house. He did not think much of it and laughed. This word "laugh" is the key point of our appreciation of this article. What did Su Shi laugh at? He laughed at his own joy of watching lanterns under the moon, laughed at the joy of leaving the house after a night tour, and laughed at the rich people's livelihood… A Note Written at Night in Tanchow Su Shi This is January 15, 1099, the Festival of Shangyuan. I am living at Tanchow. Several old scholars have come to visit me. They said, "Master, can you come out for a stroll? There is such a beautiful moon and the night is so calm."
