Editor’s Note: The poem “Master of the Thousand Pagodas” was written by Wang Wei, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty. It is suspected that he wrote it on his way to Jeju in the 9th year of Kaiyuan (721). Some say it was written in the 17th year of Kaiyuan.
Halfway Visit
It’s festive day, but alas! I must stay
At the inn, and the sail has to wait on the way.
This window looks on the stream; at the gate
Are sailing boats for a distant state.
Dogs and chickens roam the lanes,
And elms and mulberries shade the plains.
But where’s his abode, yet hidden from view?
Or can it be veiled in a rosy hue?
