Editor’s Note: In 726 AD, after four years, Wang Wei ended his tenure as a military officer in the Jizhou Sicang Army and set off to return to Beijing to accept a new appointment. The poet traveled by water and wrote this poem when his boat reached Guangwu City.

广武城边逢暮春，
汶阳归客泪沾巾。
落花寂寂啼山鸟，
杨柳青青渡水人。
Late Spring on the Si River
When spring begins to pass near Guangwu town,
It makes the wanderer’s tears come soaking down—
O the silent flower-fall, the noisy mountain birds,
The crowded ferry, the willow’s verdant crown!
