Editor’s Note: “Farewell to Xing Guizhou” is a poem written by Wang Wei, a great poet in the Tang Dynasty, to send off his friend Xing Ji to take up his post. The poem describes the scenery seen along the way from Zhenjiang to Guizhou via Dongting Lake by imagining the scenery seen by the friend while sailing on the water.

Seeing Commissioner Xing Ji Off to Guizhou

O’er Jingkou’s port crescendo melodies ring
For you who’ll ride through waves to Dongting Lake
Via Zheqi to Guizhou where all beauties cling,
While oar and boat in a mirthful dance partake.
How golden sunset makes the waters shine,
And tidal rises turn the world to a blue!
When shining wealth the commons’ purses line,
They’ll see their lord is to his mission true.
