Editor’s introduction: “Farewell to Li Shijun of Zizhou” is a poem written by Wang Wei, a Tang Dynasty poet, to send Li Shijun to Sichuan to take up his post. The poet imagines the magnificent scenery of the mountains and forests of Zizhou where his friend is an official, as well as the customs and folk sentiments, and encourages his friend to create achievements in Zizhou and surpass the sages. This poem selects the scenery that best represents the characteristics of Sichuan, and uses exaggeration to describe it, with a magnificent and broad atmosphere. The whole poem does not have the sentimental atmosphere of ordinary farewell poems, but is positive and cheerful, with a lofty and bright style. It is one of the famous farewell poems in Tang poetry.
Seeing Governor Li Off to His Post in Zizhou
It’s a land of mountains with towering trees,
Where cuckoos cry there’s “Nothing like home”;
A good night’s rain will add to these
A myriad of rills that the tree-tops comb!
There girls pay tree-flower cloth as tax,
And taro cases are brought to law.
Should patient education be lax?
Let’s think of Wen Weng in the days of yore.
