Wang Wei

Editor’s Note: “Qihu” is a five-character quatrain written by Wang Wei, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. This is a farewell poem. The sound of the flute is far away, the sky is setting, looking back at the lake, the mountains are quiet and the clouds are flying, a bleak and mournful image, setting off the atmosphere of parting. The poem is a mixture of movement and stillness, sound and color, without a single word of emotion, but the feeling of parting is strong. The whole poem is broad and profound.

The Leaning Lake

The notes of flute ring far to the waterside
As she comes to see him off in the sunset glow.
And from the lake he turns to see his bride,
To find but hills so blue and clouds like snow!
