Editor’s Note: “Remaining in the Mountains” is a five-character poem written by Wang Wei, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. This poem mainly describes the poet’s life and state of mind after he retired to the mountains, writes about the comfort of life, expresses the poet’s appreciation of the rural scenery, and also reveals the poet’s loneliness between the lines. The whole poem is fresh and interesting, vividly depicting a picture of rural life, fully embodying Wang Wei’s characteristic of “painting in poetry”.

Views from My Mountain Abode

In quietude half-closed I pull my fence
To face the sunset and the twilight thence.
The cranes make pines their nests athwart the slopes
When not a guest towards y door-way gropes.
The young bamboos are decked with powders white,
The lotus red has dropped old skirts down right.
And by the ferry torches and lanterns are burned—
With loads of water chestnuts the folk have returned.
