Zhu Shuzhen: Charming Eyes ~ 朱淑真·《眼儿媚》 with English Translations

The poem “Graceful Eyes, Gentle Spring Day” was written by Zhu Shuzhen, a female poet of the Southern Song Dynasty. The lyrics depict the beautiful wind and sun, with fragrant flowers, but in the blink of an eye, the Qingming Festival has passed, with fallen flowers and flying fluff, and clouds locking onto the Zhu Lou, making it unbearable to look back on. The next film depicts waking up from a dream in the afternoon, hearing the orioles through the green window and evoking spring sorrows with their melodious sounds. The final three sentences are creatively conceived and contain infinite meaning. The lyrics express the sentiment of cherishing spring through the description of spring scenery. The whole word is shallow in meaning, with light language and strong emotions, fresh and gentle, and unique in style.

Charming Eyes

Zhu Shuzhen

A faint fragrance drifts along the flower-fring’d path in th’ air;

The sun shining, th’ breeze caresses th’ willows with care.

After Pure Brightness I can’t bear,

However, to recall the days of th’ past,

When with dark clouds the tower’s overcast.

The melodious voices of warblers, which to my ear

Sound like cries of grief after my noon nap, appear

To be coming from far and near—

From th’ willows green, from th’ apricots in red,

And from th’ begonias beside the shed.

Tune: Fascinating Eyes

Zhu Shuzhen

In late spring days the gentle breeze

Plays with the slender willow trees;

Fragrance permeates the flowery pathway.

After the clear, bright Mourning Day,

How can I bear to think of bygone hours

Now clouds have veiled my crimson bower?

I wake from nap to hear the happy orioles sing.

Where will their songs evoke the grief of spring?

In willows’ shade,

By balustrade

Of the Crabapple Bower,

Amid apricot flowers.
