刘表的这个后事安排是不恰当的，它为后来荆州的分裂打下了基础，甚至可以说自从刘表做出让刘琮接班，把刘琦派出去当江夏太守的这个决意以后，荆州集团在事实上已经分裂成两派，一派以刘琮为名义上的代表，背后是蔡瑁、蒯越这些人。蒯越我们前面讲了是曹操欣赏的人，蔡瑁估计与曹操有旧，跟曹操老早就认识了，后来曹操得到荆州以后，还进了蔡瑁的家，到了他的内室，见到了蔡瑁的妻子，可见曹操和蔡瑁的关系是很好的，那么这一派我们可以叫做降曹派。
