01:00 AM – Chinese Movies Reviews
Chinese:夜半一點鐘Tsui Kam-Kong and Jordan Chan Year:1995 Director:Wilson Yip Wai-Shun Producer:Andy Chin Wing-Keung Writer:Philip Kwok Wai-Chung, So Man-Sing Cast:Veronica Yip Yuk-Hing, Anita Yuen Wing-Yee, Elvis Tsui Kam-Kong, Jordan Chan Siu-Chun, Anthony Wong Yiu-Ming, Jessica Suen Huen, Farini Chang, Ivy Leung Si-Man, Hung Suet-Ying, Candy Hau Woon-Ling The Skinny:Positively mild horror comedy from director Wilson Yip that lacks the payoff to make it more than a minor distraction. Maybe okay for Wilson Yip completists or fans of the stars, but really, this is not a film worth seeking out. Reviewby Kozo:Minor horror-comedy from director Wilson Yip, who went to to direct actual good movies. 01:00 AM is a typical Hong Kong horror comedy, which means there are three stories related by a single thread. In this case, they all take place at 1:00 am, and involve ghosts of some sort. Periodically, people get scared and a variety of mild hijinks occur. Sometimes, there really isn't much to get scared about, and it's merely the characters reacting to imagined stimuli. In some ways, the events of this film are not dissimilar to those at a junior high school slumber party. In story one, nurse Veronica Yip must safeguard a comatose popstar (Anthony Wong Yiu-Ming), but she starts seeing him and some strange girl wandering around at 1:00 a.m. every evening.…- 0

Peking Opera Blues – 刀马旦 – Chinese Movies
English name:Peking Opera Blues Broadcast time:September 6, 1986 Starring:钟楚红(Cherie Chung)、叶倩文(Sally Yeh)、林青霞(Brigitte Lin)、谷峰、郑浩南(Mark Cheng) director:徐克(Hark Tsui) Introduction Today let's take a brief introduction of a famous Chinese movie named "Peking Opera Blues".“Daomadan” is one of the “Dan” roles in Peking opera, and “dan” refers to the female characters of different ages and identities. Daomadan plays the female warrior role that is highly skilled in military drill, usually riding a horse with a sword held in hand. They are mostly marshals or generals; hence often present an imposing manner, such as Mu Guiying, Fan Lihua, etc. In terms of stage performance, Daomadan attaches equal importance to chang (singing), nian (dialogue), and zuo (acting). She is also required to have combat skill, but the combat scene is far less fierce than that of “Wudan”, and stress is laid on figure posture, highlighting the mighty and dignified temperament of the role. Compared with other terminological names of Peking opera roles, Daomadan has got widespread fame for the namesake movie directed by Hark Tsui in 1986 (the film is entitled ‘刀马旦’ in Chinese, which writes ‘Daomadan’ in pinyin, but the English title is ‘Peking Opera Blues’). Peking Opera Blues (or Daomadan in Chinese) was one of the…- 0

The Bride with White Hair – 白发魔女传 – Chinese Movies
English name:Bride with White Hair Broadcast time:August 26, 1993 Starring:张国荣(Leslie Cheung)、林青霞(Brigitte Lin)、蓝洁瑛(Yammie Lam) director:于仁泰(Ronny Yu) Introduction Today let's take a brief introduction of a famous Chinese movie named "The Bride with White Hair"(白发魔女传Báifà Mónǚ Zhuàn) The Bride with White Hair is a 1993 Hong Kong (香港Xiānggǎng) film directed by Ronny Yu, starring Brigitte Lin and Leslie Cheung. The film's main character, Lian Nichang, is loosely based on the protagonist of Liang Yusheng's novel Baifa Monü Zhuan, which had earlier served as source material for the 1982 film Wolf Devil Woman. However, Yu saw the film as a Romeo and Juliet story and said that the lovers' struggle against fate and their heroic duty inspired him more than the familiar trappings of most martial arts adventure films. As such, the film departs significantly from the original source. A sequel, The Bride with White Hair 2, directed by David Wu, was released later in the same year. Plot Zhuo Yihang was raised by Taoist Ziyang of the Wudang Sect and groomed to become a young chivalrous swordsman. He is placed in command of a coalition army formed by the eight major orthodox martial arts sects, which aims to prevent an evil cult from infiltrating…- 0

The film starring Leon Lai (黎明Lí Míng), Feng Shaofeng (冯绍峰Féng Shàofēng), Zhang Hanyu (张涵予Zhāng Hányǔ) and Anthony Wong (黄秋生Huáng Qiūshēng) is set during the fall of the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC), when sworn brothers Xiang Yu (项羽Xiàng Yǔ) and Liu Bang (刘邦Liú Bāng) both had ambitions of becoming the emperor. Plot It tells the story of how they turned against each other, and how Liu escapes a banquet where Xiang plots to assassinate him. While Liu and Xiang's battle of courage, patience and wits plays out, the film also delves into the fight between their counselors and warriors. Lee, known for his martial arts films "Black Mask" and "14 Blades" does well at depicting the characters' delicate and complicated emotional changes through aggressive action-packed confrontations. During the Banquet at Hongmen, the two famous counselors Fan Zeng and Zhang Liang play the game of go (weiqi) on behalf of their soldiers. The philosophy of I Ching, or the Book…- 0

Last Hero in China – 黄飞鸿之铁鸡斗蜈蚣(1993) – Chinese Movies
English name:Last Hero in China Broadcast time:April 1, 1993 Starring:李连杰(Jet Li)、张敏(Cheung Sharla)、张卫健(Dicky Cheung)、陈百祥(Chan, Natalis)、梁家仁(Ka-Yan Leung)、刘家辉(Gordon Liu)、徐忠信(Alan Chui)、朱铁和(Jue Tit-Woh)、袁咏仪(Anita Yuen)、苑琼丹(Kingdom Yuen)、梁佩瑚(Isabel)、贾天怡(Tin Yi Ku)、张兰英 director:王晶(Jing Wong)、袁和平(Woo Ping Yuen) Introduction Today,we are going to talk about a 1993 Hong Kong film, Last Hero in China(黄飞鸿之铁鸡斗蜈蚣Huáng Fēihóng zhī tiějī dòu wúgōng). It is written and directed by Wong Jing(王晶Wáng Jīng). It is a derivative of the Once Upon a Time in China film series, and unlike other imitations, it can be considered a spin-off or parody to some extent. It was released after the first three films in the Once Upon a Time in China franchise. The film starred Jet Li as Chinese folk hero Wong Fei-hung(黄飞鸿Huáng Fēihóng) and the action choreography was done by Yuen Woo-ping. However Last Hero in China differs greatly in tone from the Once Upon a Time in China films as it contains stronger elements of violence and broader, more slapstick, comedy. As Tears Go By – 旺角卡门 – Chinese Movies
English name:As Tears Go By Broadcast time:June 9, 1988 Starring:刘德华(Andy Lau)、张曼玉(Maggie Cheung)、张学友(Jacky Cheung)、万梓良(Alex Man) director:王家卫(Wong Kar-wai) Introduction Today, I will introduce a Chinese film which called As Tears Go By (旺角卡门wàngjiǎo kǎ mén). So let us have a brief introduction. As Tears Go By is a 1988 Hong Kong film that was the directorial debut of Wong Kar-wai (王家卫Wáng Jiāwèi). Critics have compared the film to Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets, as the central plot revolves around a small time gangster trying to keep his smaller-time gangster friend out of trouble. Wong Kar Wai's debut feature As Tears Go By is a visceral, idiosyncratic gangster picture, a raw and stylish film that balances gritty realism with bold stylization, colorful imagery and rapid leaps into frenzied action sequences or hazy, drifting slow motion. Violence in this film erupts suddenly, its impact heightened by Wong's accelerated cutting, which signals the abrupt transition from ordinary reality to the bloody, brutal hyper-reality of the fight scenes. A fight scene at a pool hall is preceded by a slow, tense buildup as the inept Triad thug Fly (Jacky Cheung 张学友Zhāng Xuéyǒu) taunts a rival, mocking him by moving balls around on the pool table, brazenly cheating and essentially daring the…- 0
