Chinese Film: Nanking 南京 ~ Chinese Movies&TV
Based on Iris Chang's book The Rape of Nanking(南京大屠杀 Nānjīng dà túshā), this film-length documentary relates the terrible events that lasted for six weeks from December 13, 1937, following the entry of the Imperial Japanese Army into Nanjing(南京 Nánjīng), the Chinese capital of the time. Making full use of film evidence, historical documents such as journals and letters (narrated by actors), as well as the eyewitness testimony of survivors, this sober, responsible, yet inevitably shocking work describes an atrocity whose sheer magnitude ensures its reverberation down to the present day. Even those already acquainted with the grim facts can expect to be profoundly affected by this multifaceted portrait of abysmal horror. The documentary nevertheless makes a brave attempt to inject an element of Schindler's List-style redemption into the midst of mass-murder, rape and torture, by detailing the especially well-documented feat of Western residents who – not yet at war with Japan – were able to establish a limited "safety zone" within which 200,000 Chinese civilians took refuge. A disturbing epilogue confirms the persistence of a fundamental mismatch between Chinese and Japanese perceptions of the massacre. A Japanese nationalist atrocity-denial movie, with the provisional title The Truth About Nanking, is apparently already… -

The Flowers of War – 金陵十三钗 – Chinese Movies
Introduction Today let’s take a brief introduction of a famous Chinese movie named “The Flowers of War”.Based on Yan Geling‘s novel “13 Flowers of Nanjing,” the Nanjing massacre plays front and center in director Zhang Yimou‘s tale. Zhang Yimou’s great gift for stories of resilient women serves him well in “The Flowers of War,” a uniquely harrowing account of the rape of Nanjing. Simultaneously florid and gritty, this fictitious drama about convent students and prostitutes hiding together from the 1937 Japanese onslaught is a work of often garish dramatic flourishes yet undeniable emotional power, finding humor and heartbreak in a tale of unlikely heroism in close quarters. Making his way through the bombed-out rubble of Nanjing, American mortician John Miller (Bale) arrives at a cathedral to attend to a recently deceased priest. To the dismay of the church’s boy warden, George, and the dozen or so adolescent girl students in his care, Miller turns out to be a genially lazy opportunist who immediately plunders the communion wine supply. When a small army of courtesans barge into the church seeking sanctuary from the Japanese, who have overtaken the city, Miller is delighted at the prospect of his own personal harem and flirts aggressively with…- 0

Uproar in Heaven 3D(大闹天空) ~ Chinese Movies&TV
Is he god, warrior or simply a naughty boy? The Monkey King’s conflicting personas are part of what makes the character so special, but Sun Wukong (孙悟空) in “Uproar in Heaven 3D” (大闹天宫 Dà Nào Tiāngōng) definitely has more of the latter. After all, this is a feature-length cartoon. The protagonist of Wu Cheng’en’s (吴承恩) classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West” (西游记), Sun Wukong is a brave yet mischievous monkey assigned to protect the monk Xuanzang during his pilgrimage to India. Thanks to an array of TV dramas, movies, comics and videogames, his adventures are well known in China, across all generations, particularly those who grew up watching the 1980s TV series (with its epic theme tune) starring Liuxiaolingtong. “Uproar in Heaven 3D” is a remake of another visualization of the Monkey King story, the original “Uproar in Heaven”, which was considered a landmark picture in the potted history of Chinese animated film. The original Uproar focused on the first seven chapters of the epic novel, covering the birth of this miraculous monkey and his rise to become the monk’s divine protector. For producer Wan Laiming (万籁鸣), bringing what he considered to be one of the greatest Chinese narratives…- 0

Tragic Goddess: Ruan Lingyu 悲剧女神阮玲玉
Ruan Lingyu (阮玲玉 Ruǎn Língyù) was born on April 26, 1910. She was a silent-film actress still remembered by many, left behind 29 films and the final message, "gossip can kill," when she committed suicide in Shanghai on March 8, 1935. As one of the most prominent Chinese film stars of the 1930s, her tragic death at the age of 24 led her to become an icon of Chinese cinema. Ruan Lingyu was China's first film actress to win extensive praise from the public. Her appearance marked the turning point when Chinese cinema rid itself of the fetters of the stylized performances typical of contemporary dramas and took to the road of realistic performance. Ruan LingYu was discovered by director Bu Wancang from Star Film Company and starred in her first film Husband and Wife in Name (1926). The film was a mild success and she starred several films for Star in the next few years. Her career took off when she left Star and joined Da Zhonghua Baihe Film Company which merged with other companies and became Lianhua Film Company later. The first film she starred for Lianhua, A Dream in the Old Capital (1929) was a huge success and made… -
Chinese Film: the War 战争 ~ Chinese Movies&TV
War is director Philip G. Atwell's Hollywood feature debut, after cutting his teeth on hip-hop music videos – experience that translates onto celluloid in the form of flying bullets, swords and fists, punctuated by dramatic explosions, fast cars, and some very beautiful women. Jason Statham reprises his US accent – until he shouts, that is – as an FBI agent who is hell-bent on bringing mysterious mercenary Rogue (Li) to justice for killing his partner. This personal vendetta unfolds within a larger war on the streets of San Francisco, as the Yakuza's hired gun begins to play his paymasters off against the Triads, while staying one step ahead of the authorities. Sharp dialogue has been dismissed at the expense of sharp swords and sharper suits. Jet Li hardly says a word but his actions speak volumes as the corpses mount up. This is an action film, and a violent one at that – the bloodshed matches an abattoir staffed by accident-prone hemophiliacs. The obligatory twist in the denouement suggests that there is a moral buried somewhere beneath the body count: the effect of violence, the reasons for it and the desire to avenge it, rips apart every relationship in the… -

Released in 1987, it was largely ignored by critics busy fawning over the emergence of some of China’s biggest film talents: Chen Kaige released the classic “Yellow Earth” in 1984 with Zhang Yimou as his cinematographer, then Zhang Yimou went on to release his directorial debut “Red Sorghum” in 1987, which was also the debut of superstar actress Gong Li. Especially in foreign circles, everyone was talking about the so-called Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers, the first class to graduate from the Beijing Film Academy after a tumultuous period in China’s history. Not many people were talking about Huang Shuqin, a director who had graduated from the Academy right before it (even though much of her best work comes from the 1980s). “Woman, Demon, Human” — called 人鬼情 Rén Guǐ Qíng in Chinese — doesn’t have the visual beauty that marks Zhang Yimou’s early films. Huang’s plot is largely…- 0
