根据《三国志》的记载，关羽降于禁、斩庞德以后，《三国志·关羽传》的说法是“威震华夏”，就是整个中原地区都震动了。曹操召集会议，讨论迁都问题，要避开关羽的锋芒。当然，曹操是不是真有迁都的这个想法，学术界也是有争议的，虽然它是正史明文这么记载，但是也有历史学家说曹操还不至于。但是，曹操方面感到震惊这点是肯定的，所以曹操也召开了这个会议来讨论这个形势，这个也是可以肯定的。那么在这个会议上面司马懿他们就提出来一个建议——联合孙权。
司马懿他们说，刘备取得这样大的一个成就，绝对不是孙权愿意看到的。孙权的心思其实很清楚，他当年赤壁之战的时候和刘备联盟是想让刘备做他的马仔，现在看到刘备这么大了，他绝对不愿意。所以司马懿、蒋济这些人就建议曹操说，给孙权许个愿，让他在后面干一下。曹操同意，向孙权发出信号。孙权马上回应，写了一封信给曹操，“乞以讨羽自效”，说请丞相批准我讨伐关羽，报效朝廷；但是有一个请求，请保密。

曹操把孙权的信拿来交给大家看，你们觉得应不应该答应，应不应该保密呀？大家说那当然要保密了，军事行动就是要机密嘛，最好是孙权悄悄地开过来，突然出现打关羽一下，不挺好吗？但是有一个谋臣叫做董昭的，——这个董昭在我们的节目里面以前是多次出现过的，观众朋友已经不陌生的一个人物，——董昭说：不，丞相，我们不但不给孙权保密，我们要泄密。为什么呢？保密，对孙权有利；泄密，对我们有利。请丞相想一想，我们一旦泄密会发生什么事？无非是关羽知道了。关羽知道了，他有两种可能：第一种是他立即调过头去打孙权，那我们樊城之围不就立即解除了吗？还有一种可能呢，是关羽他不立即回去打孙权，因为关羽这个人他太牛了。这样的情况下，我们必须让我们樊城的守将知道事情有救了。不管哪种可能，我们都要泄密。曹操点头，对。下命令，把孙权写来的信抄上几份，用箭射出去，有的射到曹仁的樊城，有的射到关羽的军营。于是曹仁和关羽都知道了，曹仁知道以后马上宣布，说孙权要从后面来打关羽了，全军欢呼，士气倍增，有希望了嘛。

关羽拿到信以后就犹豫了，关羽果然犹豫了，因为现在关羽确实骑虎难下。这个樊城它被洪水泡着，那个墙都是快被泡塌了的，他觉得这个樊城唾手可得啊，如果现在撤军，前功尽弃，他不甘心；另外他觉得他的江凌、公安不是孙权一下子可以拿下的，所以他没有撤军。关羽没有撤军，曹操这边就动作了，一方面是曹仁的守军士气倍增，另外一方面是徐晃的援军他也士气倍增，正好曹操又派了十二营人马来增援徐晃，徐晃下令进攻关羽。

那么，这一仗打得关羽没有抵挡得住，只好撤军。樊城之围解了。孙权那边呢？孙权那边一接到关羽开始调兵前往襄樊前线的消息，吕蒙的病就好了，陆逊也不书生了，两路出发，去抄关羽的老窝。而且吕蒙采取了一个什么办法呢？历史上称之为“白衣渡江”。就是他让他的士兵都穿上白衣服，把自己的军队装扮为商队，把兵船装扮为货船，沿着长江向江陵进发。沿途碰见关羽的岗哨，就说我们做生意的啊，聊着聊着天这边人上去把岗哨干掉了。一路上静悄悄地就来到了南郡，吕蒙的军队一到南郡，守江陵的和守公安的人投降了，这两个人马上就投降了。所以，吕蒙兵不血刃就拿下了南郡。而陆逊呢？也是一路凯歌，陆逊的军队到了哪里？到了夷道，把住了长江的峡口，以防刘备的援军前来进攻。所以我们看一下这个地图我们就知道了，这个时候关羽的情况是什么呢？襄樊是曹操的军队，夷道是陆逊的军队，南郡是吕蒙的军队，这么一个大口袋，已经把关羽围起来了。那么关羽将如何办呢？请看下集——败走麦城。
