根据《三国志·周瑜传》裴松之注引《江表传》，当天晚上周瑜和孙权还有一次谈话。这一次是周瑜自己一个人去见孙权，周瑜说：我那些可尊敬的同事只看到曹操来信说，今治水军八十万众，他们就闻风丧胆了，他们没有认真地考虑一下，曹操这封信上说的八十万这个数字是准确呢还是不准确呢，现在周瑜就为主公算一笔明细账：曹操从北方带来多少人呢？充其量十五六万，曹操从刘表那里，具体说就是从刘琮那里了，接收了荆州的投降军有多少呢？充其量七、八万，加起来也就是二十多万，而这二十多万人一部分是曹操从北方带来的疲劳不堪，一部分是从刘琮率领他们投降的离心离德，这样一伙人怎么打仗呢？请主公给周瑜五万精兵，一定大破曹军。这个时候孙权就摸着周瑜的背说，请注意这有“抚背”二字，抚背是表示信任、亲切的动作，孙权就摸着周瑜的背说：公瑾兄啊，谢谢你，他说子布——就是指张昭了——子布这些人只考虑自己的老婆、孩子荣华富贵，他们的议论使孤非常失望，只有公瑾还有子敬主张抗战，和孤的想法一样，这是上天把你们两个赐给孤啊。公瑾兄啊，实话实说，五万精兵确实一时半会凑不起来，孤已经给你选好了三万精兵，而且准备好了舰船，准备好了装备，准备好了武器，请公瑾兄和程公——也就是程普了——子敬一起先走，遇到曹军如果初战胜利，固然是好，如果不如意的话，公瑾兄你回来，孤亲自带兵和他曹孟德决一死战。讲完这个话以后，孙权就任命周瑜为前线总指挥，程普为副总指挥，鲁肃为参谋长，逆江而上去迎战曹操。

这个时候刘备已经按照鲁肃的建议从夏口来到了樊口，就是现在湖北的鄂州。到了鄂州以后，每天听到的都是坏消息，一会儿探子来报说曹军到哪儿了，一会儿探子来报说曹军到哪儿了，而诸葛亮到东吴去了以后没有回来，这个刘备心里头就心急如焚啊，于是就派他的哨兵站在码头上，盼星星，盼月亮，天天盼着诸葛亮能够陪着周瑜、鲁肃他们的救兵来啊。结果终于盼到了这一天，周瑜的部队来了，刘备马上去劳军，说能不能和周将军见一面？周瑜说军务在身，不能离开军营，如果刘豫州能够屈驾来一趟的话，周瑜非常高兴，这时刘备就跟关羽和张飞说了，他说这一回可是咱求人家，人家请我们去我们不去不好，我还是去吧。一个人坐了一条船去见周瑜，叫做“单舸赴会”。我们都知道关羽有一个单刀赴会，那以后再说，不知道刘备其实有一个单舸赴会，这证明刘备确实是英雄，不是人们想象得那么窝囊。那么刘备见周瑜以后当然有一番寒暄了，然后表示感谢了，表示慰问啊，但是也问到一个很重要的问题，就是公瑾带来了多少人？周瑜说三万。哎呀，刘备说，太少了，史书上的话是两个字：“恨少”。周瑜说，不少，请刘豫州放心地看周瑜破敌吧！周瑜这个话说得也是非常英雄，但是我们想一想看周瑜这个时候手上只有三万人，刘备手上，关羽一万人，刘琦一万人，加起来五万人；曹操是号称八十万的，打个对折四十万，是不是，再打个对折二十万，再打个对折十万，那么这五万人能对付曹操吗？
