那么这个故事在毛宗岗父子的批语里面就把曹操批得狗血喷头，毛宗岗父子怎么说呢？毛宗岗父子把这件事和曹操宛城之战哭典韦联系起来了，就是曹操第一次南征张绣的时候张绣举手投降，曹操兵不血刃就拿到了宛城，志得意满，然后忘乎所以，最后张绣突然反叛，杀得曹操措手不及，曹操的爱子，他的长子曹昂、他的侄子曹安民、他的爱将典韦都在这次战争中牺牲了，那么战后曹操举行了一个祭奠仪式来祭奠他的爱将典韦，那么根据《三国演义》的描述，曹操祭奠典韦的时候说了这样一句话，说我儿子死了，我侄子死了，我都不心疼，我心疼典韦啊！这叫做哭典韦，前面讲的呢，哭郭嘉，毛批就把这两件事情联系起来了，他说了一个什么话呢？他说：
“曹操前哭典韦，而后哭郭嘉。哭典韦之哭所以感动众将士也，哭郭嘉之哭所以愧众谋士也。前之哭胜似赏，后之哭胜似打。不谓奸雄眼泪，既可以做钱帛用，又可以做挺杖用，奸雄之奸，真是奸得可笑。”
